Sunderland Mountaineering Club (SMC) is a small sociable group which was formed in the 1960s and is based in Sunderland, though we also have members living as far afield as Wales. Members vary in age and ability and come from a wide range of backgrounds: we are brought together by our enthusiasm for the outdoors.
Activities include walking, scrambling, climbing, and also, biking and swimming. The club is affiliated to The British Mountaineering Council.
We are a friendly club whose activities centre around weekends away, usually in dedicated mountaineering huts. Some weekends are also spent camping, and we have use of a private campsite in the Lake District. Occasionally we have longer trips away. In addition there are regular climbing nights either at an indoor wall or at a local crag.
A few members also meet fortnightly at The Rosedene in Sunderland .  Other social events are arranged periodically, such as the Christmas night out.
